Moving from self-publishing my own poetry and photography to publishing the work of others. The first project for Digital Gryphon Publishing will be the ‘4 Dozen Project‘ featuring poetry, short stories, memoirs, photography and other artwork by LGBT folk Aged 48 or better.

I want to launch at the Rainbow Book Fair in NYC this April with a Call for Submissions for the first volume of collected works in the ‘4 Dozen Project‘ and the current list of titles re-issued with Digital Gryphon ISBNs.

Titles currently have CreateSpace (Amazon division) ISBNs. Distributors and retailers won’t touch such books; I need to purchase my own block of ISBNs. This proposal is to raise funds for a small block of ISBNs, the purchase of inventory, table registration and travel costs to RBF in April and the publication of the first volume of collected works in the ‘4 Dozen Project‘.

Which current Digital Gryphon titles would fit the ‘4 Dozen Project?

The authors of In Pursuit of a Dream and Echoes of My Lips, as well as the photographer featured in Shoefiti are over 48. Although not part of the project, both Ron Romanovsky and Paul Phillips (1 Out of 10 Therapists) would qualify.

Why did you pick the age of 48 as the minimum age for the ‘4 Dozen Project?

People born from the early 1950s to 1965 are the post-Stonewall, pre-Marriage Equality generation of queer folk. We heard about the Stonewall Riots but still ‘came of age’ before there was wide-spread acceptance of the concept of ‘gay rights’. At the same time many of us ‘came out’ just before or during the onslaught of the aids crisis.

Of course each of our paths is unique and age limits are always imperfect. But this seems to be a reasonable line to recognize the real, major differences between modern queer youth and their heritage.

Why launch at the Rainbow Book Fair?

The Rainbow Book Fair in NYC attracts one of the largest audience of readers and buyers of GLBT-themed books. Although not all our titles will be GLBT, it is our primary focus. Publications of the "4 Dozen Project" will be limited to self-identified LGBT authors and artists.

How will the funds be used?

The funds will cover some important elements to being a real publisher. A block of 10 custom ISBN numbers (necessary for distribution to bookstores and libraries), inventory to sell and table space at the Book Fair, promotional literature and travel expenses. Any funds in addition to the project minimum will be used for additional promotion, including donating copies of our publications to GLBT archives across North America.

Do people still buy books?

Yes. Books of photography and poetry sell in both physical and eBook form. We will offer either or both format; as suits the specific title.

Can’t you just publish via Print On Demand sites?

We’ve published some titles at Blurb and some at CreateSpace (a division of Amazon). But without our own ISBN most bookstores won’t carry (or even special order) our titles. Re-issuing with our own ISBNs means we can use POD sites as well as batch print (so long as all the specs are the same).
